The term jeans came into being in the 17th Century from the Italian word ‘Genoese’. Genoese were the Italian sailors who, on their voyages, used to prefer heavy blue cloth, later named as ‘Jeans’.

While the name Denim was coined form the French word ‘serge de Nimes’ in the 19th century. Today ‘de Nimes’ takes the name ‘denim’. During those times in England, Denim, a type of heavy cloth was widely used by laborers who wore it at work.

How did Blue Jeans Fashion come about? Officially, Jeans is a co-invention of Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, both Americans. Levi Strauss used to provide rough clothes to miners and cowboys and eventually came up with the idea of the 'serge de Nimes' a.k.a 'Denim'. But, it was Jacob Davis, a tailor, who evidently gave shape and cut to jeans. He envisioned the potential of merchandising business in Jeans.
